In a shocking incident captured on surveillance video, a car crashed into Thelma Carol Wine Merchants in the early hours of a Saturday morning, leaving the small business and its owners grappling with the aftermath.
Rebecca Sue Button, co-owner of the shop, described the scene as “horrific.” The crash resulted in a chaotic mix of shattered glass, motor oil, and Italian wine strewn across the floor. For Button and her husband, who have worked tirelessly to curate the business over the past year, it was a devastating loss.
The shop, which holds deep sentimental value for Button, is currently closed for business while they begin the challenging process of rebuilding. She expressed her hope that the responsible driver would be held accountable for the destruction caused.
Button’s heartfelt sentiment was evident as she shared, “I hope you realize what you have done to this very personal, loving, beautiful space that my husband and I have worked, I’m sorry, really hard to curate.”
Surveillance footage of the incident shows individuals exiting the car moments after the crash, collecting their belongings, and leaving the scene.
The visible damage includes a knocked-over and mangled bike rack, motor oil covering the ground, and boarded-up windows to secure the premises.
As the shop embarks on its journey to recovery, dedicated customers, such as Kallie Palm, are extending their support. Palm, who had plans for a rehearsal party at the venue, expressed their willingness to assist Button in any way possible.
Thelma Carol Wine Merchants holds a special place in the community’s heart, and the outpouring of support from its customers is a testament to the strong bonds that have formed around this cherished establishment.
“We knew we wanted to start a business here. And man, are we feeling that we made the right decision? Of course, it has been overwhelmingly beautiful, and we’re just so grateful,” Button added, emphasizing the resilience and spirit of the local business community.
