Charles Goemaere, Director General of Comité Champagne, emphasized that only sparkling wines crafted in the specific Champagne region of France located 100 miles northeast of Paris, can rightfully bear the cherished name.

“It’s a very small region, representing a mere 3 percent of France’s overall vine-planted acreage, but it’s a tight-knit community comprised of 21,000 wine growers and approximately 350 Champagne houses,” noted Mr. Goemaere. “These wines must adhere to a set of regulations established by our organization, ensuring that when consumers encounter a wine labeled ‘Champagne,’ they can be assured it originates from a distinct region and possesses specific characteristics and quality.”

This pioneering collaboration between the Champagne region and Australian winemakers reflects a growing global effort to protect the integrity of wine regions and the unique identities associated with them. It also highlights the importance of geographical indications and appellation of origin systems in the preservation of heritage and the guarantee of product quality and authenticity.

The Barossa Valley, a renowned wine-producing region in Australia, aims to bolster its international reputation as one of the world’s premier wine destinations through such partnerships and commitments to preserving the integrity of its name and the exceptional wines it produces.

This alliance underscores the shared dedication of wine regions worldwide to ensure that the names associated with their viticultural heritage and tradition remain synonymous with quality, authenticity, and excellence.
