France’s Champagne Region Joins Hands with Australian Winemakers for Name Protection.
In a significant development for the global wine industry, France’s renowned Champagne region has forged an alliance with Australian winemakers to champion the safeguarding of wine place names across the world.
For the first time, a delegation representing Comité Champagne, the organization responsible for preserving and promoting the illustrious Champagne name, has graced Australian soil. Their mission: to share insights into how they oversee and defend a name synonymous with quality and prestige, and to explore how Australian regions can adopt similar protective measures.
Comité Champagne, established 82 years ago, has been instrumental in elevating the quality of Champagne wines while steadfastly guarding the Champagne name, even resorting to legal actions where necessary.
Charles Goemaere, Director General of Comité Champagne, emphasized that only sparkling wines crafted in the specific Champagne region of France located 100 miles northeast of Paris, can rightfully bear the cherished name.
“It’s a very small region, representing a mere 3 percent of France’s overall vine-planted acreage, but it’s a tight-knit community comprised of 21,000 wine growers and approximately 350 Champagne houses,” noted Mr. Goemaere. “These wines must adhere to a set of regulations established by our organization, ensuring that when consumers encounter a wine labeled ‘Champagne,’ they can be assured it originates from a distinct region and possesses specific characteristics and quality.”
This pioneering collaboration between the Champagne region and Australian winemakers reflects a growing global effort to protect the integrity of wine regions and the unique identities associated with them.
