Dubbed ‘Wine and Dine Experiences’, each lot offered at the Sotheby’s auction boasted limited-edition wines paired with exclusive lunch and private tasting opportunities at renowned wineries.
Winemakers from around the globe generously contributed to the auction, with all proceeds directed towards the Foundation for Wine Culture and Civilisations, responsible for overseeing the operations of Cité du Vin.
One of the most coveted lots showcased a double magnum of Le Pin 2011, accompanied by a double magnum of Le Pin 2015, along with an exclusive private tasting and lunch at the esteemed Bordeaux estate for a group of eight guests. Initially estimated to fetch between €45,000 to €65,000, the lot significantly exceeded expectations, ultimately commanding a winning bid of €75,000. The fortunate bidder will partake in an exceptional dining experience alongside owners Jacques and Fiona Thienpont at the Pomerol estate.
Another notable highlight was a rare vertical collection of five magnums of Penfolds Bin 707 spanning five decades, elegantly presented in boxes autographed by chief winemaker Peter Gago, a recipient of the prestigious Decanter Hall of Fame award in 2021. This exceptional offering fetched €17,500, with the winning bidder also treated to a memorable dinner hosted by a Penfolds ambassador in Paris.
Numerous other lots surpassed their projected values, including a six-liter Imperial of Château Cheval Blanc 2008, coupled with a luncheon at the château for six guests, which garnered €16,250. Similarly, a double magnum duo of Château Figeac 2009 and Château Figeac 2010, complemented by a private tasting and luncheon at the château for six, fetched €11,875, well exceeding its upper estimate of €6,000.
Contributions from esteemed producers such as Château Latour, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Angelus, and others further enriched the auction, ensuring its success in bolstering financial support for the continued endeavors of Cité du Vin.
Launched in 2016, Cité du Vin has earned accolades as the ‘Guggenheim of wine’, and the proceeds from the auction will further its mission of promoting wine culture and heritage.
