Felix Dear, the newly appointed spirits curator at the esteemed London-based beverage retailer Berry Bros & Rudd, is optimistic about the future of independent bottling amidst challenging market conditions. Dear, who brings with him a wealth of experience garnered from roles with various reputable names in the industry, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to maintain its tradition of producing exceptional whiskies.
Taking the helm in January 2024, Dear assumes responsibility for curating Berry Bros & Rudd’s proprietary whisky offerings, which encompass a range of Classic bottlings, seasonal releases, and limited-edition collections. His appointment follows the departure of Jonny McMillan, the company’s former spirits reserve manager, who embarked on a new venture as a co-founder of the Kythe Distillery in the Scottish Highlands.
Prior to joining Berry Bros & Rudd, Dear served as the world whisky and spirits buyer at Master of Malt owner Atom Brands, where he honed his skills in independent bottlings alongside industry veteran Sam Simmons. His journey in the whisky realm also saw him as an ambassador for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and a member of the esteemed Highlander Inn team in Craigellachie, under the mentorship of owner Tatsuya Minagawa.
Reflecting on his professional evolution, Dear emphasizes the significance of learning from industry stalwarts and cherishes the ethos instilled by Simmons: “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take our whisky very seriously.”
While Berry Bros & Rudd boasts an extensive range of independent bottlings from various whisky-producing regions worldwide, Dear hints at forthcoming changes aimed at further enhancing the company’s offerings. He envisions a strategic evolution that embraces both established Scotch whiskies and emerging expressions from new-world distilleries.
