By the close of 2023, imports of still wines from the European Union experienced a decline, with Spain’s supply decreasing by 11 percent, France by 4 percent, and Italy by 1 percent. Conversely, friendly nations have ramped up their shipments. South Africa emerged as the leading supplier in 2024, with a volume of 10.5 million liters, marking a 25 percent increase. Notably, 2024 witnessed the inaugural arrival of a shipment of still wines from India in Russia after a five-year hiatus. Meanwhile, China has seen a fivefold surge in exports since 2021.

According to Roskachestvo representatives, the proportion of imports from less amicable nations is projected to diminish further in 2024, a trend bolstered by escalating excise taxes. This void in the market is anticipated to be filled by Russian wines, which are forecasted to comprise 60-65 percent of total sales volume in liters.

Additionally, sparkling wine production surged by 26.5 percent to 31 million liters. White and pink wines now command a 61 percent share of total output, whereas the share of red wines decreased by 3 percent, accounting for approximately 39 percent,” elucidated Olesya Latysheva, Director of the Department of Research and Promotion of Domestic Wine Products at Roskachestvo, and Head of the Wine Guide of Russia.
