“Maven Coffee and Cocktails Expand to Thompson Houston Hotel with Astros’ Lance McCullers Jr. as Partner”

by Kaia

Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., along with partners Juan Carlos Martinez de Aldecoa and Jimmy Doan of the Doan Law Firm, is bringing the Maven Coffee and Cocktails concept from a humble cart inside Minute Maid to its first brick-and-mortar location at the upscale Thompson Houston Hotel.

Set to open its doors on May 1 at 1717 Allen Parkway, Maven’s transition to the Thompson signifies a significant milestone for Rex Hospitality Group, the entity co-founded by McCullers and his partners. Notably, Blake Fertitta, son of billionaire Tilman Fertitta, also holds a stake in the venture, particularly in the cold brew and wholesale aspect of the coffee brand.

While Houston boasts several spots serving espresso martinis and coffee-infused cocktails, Maven stands out not just for its offerings but for the star power behind it. McCullers expresses confidence in the venture’s expansion, citing the positive reception their carts received from locals and visitors alike.

Distinct from the stadium concepts, the Thompson location features ample natural light, adorned with original artworks, and accented with shades of dark blue and bronze, creating an inviting ambiance for patrons. During daytime operations, Maven will serve a coffee-centric menu complemented by dishes like truffle grilled cheese on croissants, pastries, and freshly-squeezed juices.

Expanding beyond their signature espresso martinis and carajillos, Maven promises an extended cocktail repertoire, including creations like the Xoco Fizz, featuring Japanese whiskey, available from 10 a.m. onwards and during a forthcoming happy hour.

Martinez de Aldecoa describes the Maven at Thompson as a dual-concept space, transitioning from a vibrant coffee shop during the day to a lively cocktail bar in the evenings, catering to diverse clientele.

Not resting on their laurels, Maven had previously announced plans for a standalone location at Silver Street Studios near the Washington Avenue corridor.

Operating hours for the Thompson outpost will be from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays, offering Houstonians a new destination to indulge in coffee and cocktails alike.
