If you can’t find a Puppers, try Lynn’s Lite Lager, a new brew born from a collaboration between East Vancouver’s Container Brewing and Tyler Johnston, famed for his role as Stewart on the popular show Letterkenny. This special beer aims to raise funds and awareness for blood and platelet donations, a cause close to Johnston’s heart.
The partnership was sparked when Dan Webster, co-owner of Container Brewing, reconnected with Johnston, who had visited the brewery years ago. Webster reached out to Johnston for ideas when planning a new collaboration beer.
Johnston’s mother, Lynn, was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2023, which made the focus on blood donations an obvious choice for the collaboration. Webster, who lost his own mother to cancer, was moved by Johnston’s personal story and the critical need for blood transfusions for leukemia patients. “These blood donations are so valuable to the life of someone going through leukemia,” Webster explained, highlighting the transformative impact of fresh blood transfusions.
Together, they created Lynn’s Lite Lager, an easy-drinking, four-ingredient lager. The can design features personal touches that nod to Lynn’s passions: a steering wheel (she’s a drag racer), her favorite color purple, and a hummingbird.
The beer will be officially launched at an event on June 16 at Container Brewing’s brewpub at 1216 Franklin St. The event promises to be more than just a beer release, with Eastblvd Records DJs providing music, food trucks like Mom’s Grilled Cheese (honoring Lynn’s love for grilled cheese sandwiches), and a team from Canadian Blood Services on hand to educate attendees about blood donation (though no blood will be drawn at the event).
The Johnston family will attend the celebration, and 10% of all beer sales at Container Brewing on June 16, along with $1 from each can of Lynn’s Lite Lager sold, will be donated to a charity of Lynn’s choice.
