Chihuahua, Mexico, May 29 (EFE) – The capital of Mexico’s largest state, Chihuahua, is positioning itself as a burgeoning hub for the wine industry through the creation of the Chihuahua Wine Cluster. This initiative has garnered support from five educational institutions, which have launched seven programs focused on wine production and related tourism services.
The Chihuahua Wine Cluster has seen significant growth, becoming a key economic driver in the region. The cluster now encompasses 54 wine labels, employs over 500 workers, and generates more than 181 billion pesos ($10.7 billion) annually.
A new residential complex with surrounding vineyards is under construction along the highway from Chihuahua to Juárez, signaling the birth of a town centered on the wine industry.
Mónica Pinoncély Esquer, president of the wine cluster, explained that the region’s diverse microclimates and suitable land are ideal for growing a variety of high-quality grapes with minimal water. “There is close cooperation with the Autonomous University of Chihuahua and the cluster to develop the necessary skills for winemaking,” she said, emphasizing the need for specialized accountants, chefs, tourism experts, and legal professionals to support the industry’s growth.
A Burgeoning Industry
Pinoncély noted that Chihuahua is transitioning from artisanal wine production to establishing a significant industry that integrates tourism and business expansion. This progress is the result of coordinated efforts between the private sector, government, and academia.
“We were initially met with skepticism about producing quality wines in Chihuahua,” she recalled. Despite the doubts, wines from five local wineries have won gold and silver medals at the Brussels World Wine Competition and the Mexico International Wine Competition in Ensenada, Baja California, since 2011.
“We weren’t seeking medals; we aimed to prove that good wine could be made in Chihuahua. Winning a silver medal confirmed this,” Pinoncély said, referencing international judges’ blind tastings.
Strategically located in the center of the state, Chihuahua City is well-positioned to serve as the focal point for sales and supplies in the wine sector. Unlike other wine regions, Chihuahua’s wine industry grows in tandem with tourism development, enhancing its appeal and economic impact.
