Australia’s beer industry is currently under significant strain due to high levels of debt, excise, and cost increases, as well as instances of voluntary administration affecting brewers. Amid these challenges, the latest Australia Pulse+ Report from CGA by NIQ offers a much-needed boost.
According to the report, Anzac Day was the most lucrative Thursday of the year for Australian bars and pubs, with overall sales velocity nearly doubling compared to an average Thursday, reflecting a +98% increase. This surge was primarily driven by increased footfall, while average check values remained steady.
The report highlights a strong consumer preference for beer on special occasions, with beer sales soaring by +105% on Anzac Day. Drinking venues experienced a substantial velocity increase of +122%, significantly outperforming other venue categories. In contrast, eating outlets saw a smaller, though still notable, increase of +23%.
Regional variations were also evident. In Victoria, beverage sales were nearly double the average Thursday (+97%), while New South Wales saw sales almost triple (+194%).
James Phillips, Client Solutions Director – Australia, commented, “The latest Pulse+ Report reveals essential trends that drinks suppliers and operators need to understand for maximizing public holidays. The significant increase in beverage alcohol sales, particularly in drinking outlets, underscores the importance of strategic planning and targeted offerings on key dates. Stakeholders who get these dynamics right are well placed to meet consumer demands and enhance profitability.”
While the Australian brewing industry continues to face significant challenges, the positive trends seen on Anzac Day offer a glimmer of hope. By leveraging these insights and fostering collaboration between venues and brewers to engage consumers during key events, there is potential for a brighter future for the industry.
