Alessio Planeta, amidst the lush surroundings of London’s Kew Gardens, showcased a glass of wine in celebration of the unveiling of a new ‘botanical’ aesthetic for the Sicilian company’s La Segreta brand. The event, held yesterday, marked the debut of the 2023 vintage of La Segreta’s organic white wines – a 100% Grillo and a Bianco blend – housed in a revolutionary glass bottle crafted entirely on the island of Sicily.
While the shift may seem subtle, it represents a significant milestone in Sicilian winemaking. The production of these new bottles required overcoming numerous obstacles, marking a pioneering achievement for the region.
The newly introduced Sicilian-made bottles boast an environmentally conscious composition, with 90% of the glass sourced from recycled materials collected throughout the island, supplemented by 20% new glass to ensure structural integrity.
CEO and technical director of the wine company, Alessio Planeta, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative on Sicily’s recycling landscape. He stated, “People don’t exactly associate Sicily with recycling, but the project is ingenious in combating waste accumulation on the streets.” The endeavor began with the collection of recycled glass from select villages, gradually expanding across the island.
Italian company Sarco Srl spearheads the collection and recycling of glass waste, forming a closed-loop economy. From the raw material of Sicilian origin to the locally manufactured bottles, which are later filled with Sicilian wine by producers on the island, the entire process encapsulates a sustainable and regionally rooted approach.
