Jim Beam Refreshes Black Label Whiskey with Modern Touch

by Kaia

Jim Beam master distillers Fred and Freddie Noe are reintroducing Jim Beam Black, a whiskey that has evolved over the years and now features a contemporary update. Jim Beam Black has traditionally served as a stepping stone for budget-conscious drinkers, bridging the gap between Beam’s core white label and its more exclusive offerings.

In 2014, Jim Beam removed the whiskey’s eight-year age statement and reduced its ABV from 45% to 43%. The latest version sees a return to 45% ABV, now with a seven-year age statement.

Fred Noe reminisced about the original 101-month, 90-proof version, a personal favorite he used to sneak from his father’s liquor cabinet. “To revisit these old samples and recreate what made them special is a fantastic opportunity,” Fred said, reflecting on the legacy of his father, sixth-generation master distiller Booker Noe. “We aimed to achieve the best iteration of Jim Beam Black.”

Freddie Noe views the project as a chance to honor Beam’s rich history. He recalls a foundational principle from Jim Beam himself: produce the best whiskey possible at an affordable price. “This vision remains central to our work, ensuring our whiskey maintains the highest quality,” Freddie stated. “We aim to deliver the best version of Jim Beam with enhanced barrel character at an upper age expression.”

Together, the Noes oversee a diverse whiskey portfolio. Freddie compares Jim Beam Black to Baker’s, another seven-year-old whiskey, highlighting the distinctiveness created through variables like distillation proof, barreling proof, bottling proof, and barreling location. For Jim Beam products, achieving a balance of value and quality is paramount.

Jim Beam Black, priced at $25, will be available in sizes ranging from 50ml to 1.75L. The whiskey features notes of caramel, vanilla, and rich oak, complemented by updated packaging that reflects its maturity. This new iteration aims to offer both versatility and affordability.

Fred emphasized the whiskey’s value: “While some might spend $25 on a single drink, here you get a whole bottle of high-quality bourbon. It’s perfect for everyday enjoyment.”
