Utopian Brewing Launches Wondrous Isles, a British-Inspired West Coast Pale Ale

by Kaia

Utopian Brewing has introduced Wondrous Isles, a 4.4% ABV pale ale crafted exclusively with British ingredients. This “modern pale ale” marks an expansion from its previous limited cask releases to wider availability in keg and can formats.

Head brewer Jeremy Swainson explained the origins of Wondrous Isles, stating, “We first brewed this beer in cask over two years ago, aiming to create a standout modern pale ale using hops from the Charles Faram breeding programme.” Swainson acknowledged the challenge of using solely British hops and malts to emulate a West Coast pale ale, known for its biscuity malt, complex hop aroma, firm bitterness, and bright character. He highlighted the suitability of British hops like Godiva, Olicana, and Harlequin, which impart dank pine and complex fruit notes ideal for this style.

Swainson emphasized the uniqueness of Wondrous Isles due to its exclusive use of British hops, which not only makes the beer distinct but also supports local agriculture and reduces food miles. “Using only British hops makes Wondrous Isles genuinely unique,” he said. “It reduces our food miles and supports our growers.”

Founder Richard Archer reiterated the brewery’s commitment to its core values of natural brewing, traditional techniques, and zero additives, using only British-grown ingredients.

The launch of Wondrous Isles coincides with the start of the Euros, and Utopian Brewing has planned promotions and social media competitions throughout the tournament to support both teams from the UK. Previously available only at music festivals, Wondrous Isles is now accessible to pubs, bars, and restaurants in 30-litre kegs and 440ml cans, and can also be purchased via Utopian’s webshop.
